Feeling overwhelmed about choosing an outfit for your engagement session? We want you to look and feel your best so we asked Kari Burgess, a talented photographer who shoots many beautiful e-sessions, for her top tips on what to wear.
Change It Up Baby.
A fantastic way to add variety and different moods to your photos, is to have a change (or two) of clothes. This can add so much more variety and it gives you a chance to show different sides to your personality.
No Matchy-Matchy.
Often when people think of getting in front of a camera, their minds still wander back to family photos with faded, tapered denim jeans, white matching t-shirts, and white running shoes. If this is your style, rock it. If this is not your style, let this be your permission to not have to wear that! There is absolutely no need to wear "his and her" versions of the same outfit. Rather, coordinate and compliment one another by picking shades and tones that flatter each other. For example, tie in a colour on his shirt to your necklace or coordinate his tie to your sassy shoes.
Think Accessories!
Accessories not only add variety, interest, and texture to an outfit, but also to the photographs. Do not shy away from accessories, in photos they will be your best friend. Think chunky necklaces, adorable belts, darling shoes, cute head bands, fantastic earrings...just get creative!
You Glow Girl.
If at all possible, have your makeup professionally done. I promise you that glowy, perfect, professionally applied makeup will enhance your best features in the photographs. Ask your artist to put on individual artificial eyelashes—ones that are natural looking, not Halloween looking. This will make your eyes look more open and glamorous in photos. They do not look fake when photographed; they just make you look youthful, feminine, and sexy. In fact, sometimes at the office, we have eyelash days just to be extra gorge and sassy. We come into work wearing falsies on our own lashes...I think it makes us more fancy. I may, or may not, have some on right now.
Wear What You Love
As a photographer, one thing that I often hear is "I don't want to look too trendy because I'm afraid it will date my photos in future years". But honey, everything is going to date your photos—your hairstyle, your makeup, your clothes, even at times the setting. Everything in fashion looks dated in 20 years. The fact is, fashion evolves. It just does. Don't fight it. So what is our advice? Wear what you love. If you love it and you feel absolutely fabulous in it, wear it! From one girl to another, just wear the dang thing. You’ll love your photos of you in that little number!
